Need help with 6 wk old?

I've been having a really hard time getting my 6 week old asleep for a nap today. Everytime I put him down he doses off then wakes back up about 15 min later. And this is after I have rocked him until he has dosed off. The only thing that is keeping his eyes closed right now is my hair dryer on low next to the crib. But I know if I were to turn it off he would probably wake up again. He hasn't really slept good today at all. I just switched his formula per his pedi, to Enfamil Gentlease. He's been on it for a week now. But I'm thinking its maybe hard on his tummy because his last 3 poops have been watery. Any advice would be great! Thanks!

I've had the same problem with my baby, also 6 weeks, my solution was to lay down next to her and nurse her til she falls asleep. that's obviously not an option for you though. you are just gonna have to hold him while he sleeps, that's what i would do. the formula might be upsetting him and he wants to be comforted

First the hairdryer is not good to be on by the crib...what if it caught fire...try using a fan instead...

All babies have an off day now and then so it probably nothing. They say you should expect one bad day per week. Also babies tend to have a specific time of day they tend to be more unsettled.

Is your baby wrapped snuggly so he feels secure.

Also, I don't think it's very safe to leave your hair dryer on next to the cot. Maybe you could record the noise onto a cassette or disc and play it that way sometimes.

You don't mention what the reason for changing formula was. Is there some medical problem?

Just let him stay up. He will fall asleep when he is ready to.

He just might not feel very good today. You should get a small fan or a humidifier for some white noise. Call the doc again and tell them about his tummy.

Take him driving?

Well i agree that the hair dryer is a bad idea. Get a mobil and put it on the crib. Wind it up and he will watch it and then fall asleep. (use it for noise instead of the dryer) The dryer can cause electrocution or a fire. So it needs to go, pronto!

All babies do have off days, just like you and me. Let him stay awake for a while and he will sleep longer tonight.

Good Luck!

Another idea instead of the hair dryer is a small old tv put on a blank channel (don't hook up cable) and let him hear that noise. I've heard it works!

try a radio. any talk radio station worked good for my nephew and still does and he is almost 3.

First, as hard as it is, put him in his crib awake. He needs to learn to put himself to sleep. 6 weeks is a good time to start doing this. Let him cry. Again, very hard. I don't mean let him scream for hours, but let him fuss, he will learn to self soothe. Be consistant, don't run to him at every sound. As long as he's dry, warm, and has a full belly he will learn that being in the crib means going to sleep and the crying will get shorter each time, until he welcomes being put down for naps. Next, turn that hair dryer off. Its a fire hazard, if you want to give him white noise, use a fan (facing away from him) or a white noise machine. Good luck.

The hairdryer is a good idea. Sounds like you are being safe about it and babies want that white noise. There are websites that have mp3s of white noise sounds that are free to download. Why turn off the sound? Whatever makes your baby sleep. :)

At 6 weeks my son started sleeping a lot less and within two weeks had settled into a routine of being awake for an hour and a half and then sleeping for half an hour. However he also started having longer periods of sleep at night which was nice. Just follow babies lead for when he needs to nap, don't force him. He started playing on his activity mat when he was awake as well and generally being more aware of what was going on. Also he went through a feeding binge as he hit a growth spurt at that age too. So lots of changes can make for an interesting week while you work out the new routine. Good luck!!

Hi! Im a mother of two. one three years, and the other 4 months. With my first, she had a hard time staying asleep too! I thought it could be an ear ache or something that made her feel uncomfortable.

Check first if there is something physically uncomfortable, clothes tight, loose, itchy; blanket, air tempeture, noise, etc.

If nothing like that seems to be the problem, try white noise. the humming of the blowdryer is an example of white noise, and that maybe the reason he's still sleeping. Other examples are the humming of a fan, AC, static on the radio, even a drive in the car.

For my older daughter, when her stool was loose, I'd use half a teaspoon of Cornstarch to thincken it again. She was at the teething age and older. Guava Juice works too! If he starts to develop rash, wash after EVERY movement, even urine. (Do not use wipes. It'll irrate the area and make it worse.)

My Doctor says as long as they are eating and pooping then all is OK!

If baby is not feeling well, hold him. YOU are the best medicine.

Hope this helps! :)

I remember when my sons were that age, i would have them in a wind-up swing and that seemed to help them nap throughout the day. I can imagine that your baby doesn't sleep during the night either. If this is the case, you might need to try to keep him awake as much as you can (don't keep him awake all day, that would definately wear him out) He will sleep much better at night. Also, lavender helps. Try using lavender lotion before naptimes. It may just be gas. If it's that, they have this stuff called Mylecon drops found in the baby isle at walmart. It's INSTANT gas releif..... and it works!!!! Why did you switch his formula? Try soothing music rather than the blow dryer (not a good idea).

I am having the same issue with my 8 week old. I think it is just a phase. I also used the Gentlease formula though and just switched back to Enfamil Lipil. I think that formula helped with his gas and was better for his tummy but he slept less for some reason. It may just be his growth spurt. If it lasts more than 2 more weeks I would ask his doctor.

Try putting him in his bed when he's tired but not asleep and if he fusses let him for about 5 minutes then check on him, let him know you loves him and make sure you start a routine and even as hard as it is especially when there sick you need to be putting him in his own bed all the time as much as possoble when he is going to sleep or falls asleep.
