How can I remove adhesive residue from a painted wall without stripping the paint off?

The couple who lived in our apartment before us had a small child and hung learning posters all over the living room using household masking tape. Now we are left with this gunk in outlines of the previous posters. I have tried a hair dryer, vinegar, using more tape to pull off the adhesive, and lots of elbow grease. Importantly, I don't want stains (walls are off-white) and I don't want to have to repaint. I read some people using WD-40, but that's oil-based. Won't it stain? Help me please.

Use a painters' five in one tool to carefully scrape off all you can. Then a Magic Eraser or rubbing alcohol.

Rubbing alcohol is a great solvent for things like that. It won't strip the paint, either.

Mr. Clean has a Magic Eraser that works.

Scrape it as smooth as you can and spackle and paint.
