Why does my circuit breaker periodically shut off?

It controls the upstairs bathroom, some electrical plugs in the bathroom, and an outdoor light fixture with a motion sensor. It went off once over a year ago, and has kicked out three times in the last few weeks, twice within a half hour. There was no excessive load at the time it went off. The lights are out, no major current going through any of the outlets. In fact, it hasn't ever gone out while the lights are on and my wife is using a hair dryer. The outdoor light fixture hasn't been on either, since it usually occurs during the day, and that outdoor light is rarely on... it's motion controlled, more for security than for lighting.

There is moister in the fixture or the wiring tripping the gfi or the breaker in the panel box.

replace the breaker and see what happens, sometimes they break like everything else, if the new breaker trips too and you are not overloading it, you have a short and thats overloading it

Why does my circuit breaker periodically shut off?

How old is the main panel? You could have a weak breaker or you might have a loose fit where the breaker fits on the bus bar.Touch the breaker and see if it is warm or hot to the touch.Good Luck

Why does my circuit breaker periodically shut off?

Well, breakers have been known to go bad. If you're sure there are no excessive loads, you could just try replacing it (they're relatively cheap) to see if the problem goes away. If it doesn't, then you'll have to look further. Is there any chance this is a GFCI or AFCI breaker?

Why does my circuit breaker periodically shut off?

Something is causing the trip.

The breakers can weaken over time, but when it becomes a big problem all of the sudden, it's usually indicative of something being wrong.

Whether it's a pinched wire, chewed on by a rodent in the attic or wall, or even a loose neutral causing an increased load.

It's time to call an electrician to come check things out.
