Smoke detectors won't stop beeping. Have replaced units and batteries. HELP!!!?

I have 4 hard wired Firex smoke detectors. The one upstairs will randomly beep (no set day or time). Beeps once, stops for about 10 seconds, beeps again, stops for about 10 seconds and proceeds to do this 2 more times, for a total of 4 times. Then, it stops. I replaced all of the batteries, still did it. I replaced all of the units and it still does it. Could there be an interruption in the current? My neighbor (and a contractor friend of his) suggested taking a hair dryer and drying the connections, in case there is condensation or some type of moisture. I did that and it still beeps. I called Firex and they were no help. I called the builder (townhome is 5 years old) and they told me to replace thie units, which I did. I am at a loss and so baffled!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Is anyone able to offer me some guidance? Thank you, in advance, for your help!

OK, Here's the real thing.....If you live in a condo or an apartment, then your detectors are tied into a panel somewhere in the building with all the other condos. The panel will show trouble if there is something wrong, and call the fire department (with the help of a dialer located right next to the panel) should a smoke alarm be activated.

These smoke alarms are not your standard 120v alarms that you buy at home depot. They are actually 24v alarms that get it's power from the panel. That's why if you shut off all the breakers in your unit, the alarms are still active. That's also why your 120v detector keeps beeping, it's only getting 24v which is not enough to operate the detector.

So what you need to do is find out what alarm company your condo association uses (it will have a label on the box) and call them for replacements that will work with that system.

By the way, there is probably at least one smoke detector that looks different from the others and that's because it's a heat sensor. So make sure you replace a smoke alarm with a smoke alarm, and a heat sensor with a heat sensor.

You can verify this if you'd like by taking a volt meter to the circuit and you'll be getting 24v even if you shut off all power to your unit.

This is what I'd do if it were me. I'd grab my husbands hammer and pound on them until they stopped making noise.

hardwired smoke detectors will beep if they are failing. You will need to replace the detector head with a compatible model. If you have a fire alarm, you will need to determine if the detector has a Normally Open or Normally Closed circuit........

Call your building management and have them service the system.........If they will not help you, call your town's fire official and have them come out and write an citation of repair for the building management.

I've heard a problem similar to this. My friend bought a brand new house with these hard wired smoke detectors. All of them were connected to each other, so if one had it's batteries get low, they all beep. Well, they started to beep about 8 months after he moved in. He changed all of their batteries. The problem continued. Well, it turns out, there was one other smoke detector that he did not know about. It was accidentally (or not) put inside one of the walls. It was really stupid. They found out were it was- punched a hole in the wall and got rid of it. Maybe this can help you. Maybe not. But I thought it was amusing. :-)

I read where when this happens it is usually where the detectors are located .

Also it suggest that heat can trigger them .......

Do you have yours where it get perhaps more of the heat in the house ?

Too'maybe you need an electrician to come in and check it out .

you may have some mixed up wiring and that could cause a fire in its self.

Feel the walls where you have the units and see if its hot or even warm?

If so call your local fire dept or electrician to check it out pronto!

I had a similar problem with a smoke detector which would go off when the steam from the kettle happened. The unit was 25ft away, and of course this is NOT smoke. Did some checking and found out that some of the detectors with certain components do this so changed ours and no problems since! Ours is not hard-wired but straight battery. Ours also has NO radio-active components in it, which we understand is the best one to have, and not just for the obvious reasons. You may have a similar problem to me because it sounds like your detectors may be reacting to heat [like the steam from my kettle] and not to a fire's CHEMICAL component, which is what a detector is supposed to sense! Take all of your detectors [the ones you took out and the ones installed] to a testing facility [check with your local council, fire authority, electricity authority, etc] for the correct one to go to, for your own peace of mind and for others who may have the same units, that COULD BE FAULTY %26amp; FATAL in the event of a fire. I am sorry for your frustration and hope you get the right help, SOON!!

Hard wired smoke detectors are sensitive to power quality. If there is a brief low voltage or a spike on the circuit the detector is connected to, it can do some odd things. Do you know which circuit the detector is wired into? Is there something else connected to that circuit that is switching on or off when this happens?

most modern detectors are mains and battery powered.check to see if you have any tripped circuit breakers or a blown fuse.if there is no power the detectors bleep to warn you they are running on batteries alone

Are you sure the 120 volt power is turned on check your service panel if the power is of they will continue to beep letting you know that the power is off if this is the case you will have to replace all the batterys agian. after you replace the batterys check all the detectors make sure you have a green light on the unit. If you find one that has a red light push the reset button you should get a green light after that. you should have no more beeping.GOOD LUCK

  1. Installing a smoke detector in your home is a great way to alert your family of fire danger. The best line of protection would include one alarm per floor of your home.
