First off, you certainly **can** get a converter at most Airport stores specializing in needs for travelers. Although, if you're still in the U.S.A., you can go to Radio Shack and purchase one there as well.

You can also find converters at places like The Sharper Image, Brookstone, and other specialty electronics stores.

I think Best Buy or a similar electronics store should have one. Maybe even Walmart or Target.

If in France is 100~110V you could get in a store right beside of Tottenham Court Road station entrance by Oxford Street. The converter will cost around 40 pounds which can take more than 40 Watts. You must know the device's potency that you gonna use, other wise the sails man wont let you buy it. I tried to use the 40 watts that cost around 20 quid with my notebook and the converter burnt. Probably would be better if you find one converter in your country and get only the adapter there.

Ps: the voltage there is 220 to 240V.

Have a look at the Maplin website.

They had them last time I looked.

I've bought them at Walmart and at Radio Shack in the past. They're fairly common and reasonably inexpensive. Just make sure you get the variety pack of plugs. ..you'd be amazed at the variety of different plugs in Europe. Honestly though, with teh possible exception of a laptop computer, I'd leave all of your electric appliance at home and buy what you need once you arrive. (Go to Boots.) Other than a hair dryer, I can't imagine what else you'd need in the way of small appliances.
