Stopping cold air from windows?

We have our couch sitting under 3 windows. When it gets cool outside at night, we can feel the cold air on the back of our necks. Each window is covered with a wooden valence. This cool air takes up about 6" on the bottom of each window. I should note, that this is *not* a draft; we did the candle test.

What we've tried so far:

- plastic kit from Home Depot. (the one where you use a hair dryer). Didn't work. We don't want to get "heavy" plastic either; we still want to be able to see outside.

- bought some insulated shades. Worked, but didn't look great; like a wall of fabric.

- costed out getting insulated/thermal roman shades for each window. Would probably work, but way to expensive; we're talking hundreds of dollars for each window.

- looked at draft stoppers... couldn't find the right size. It's not a draft anyhow.

The windows are only 2 years old, and professionally installed. We checked all corners, and no cracks or leaks and found none.

Do you have storm windows?

well firstly call the manufactorer and complain because they made have already recieved some complaints and if thats a no winner then look at moving the sofa

If they are single pane glass then there's not much you can do except install a quality storm window. You need a quality double pane or triple pane to keep the heat/ cool exchange to a minimum.

As it's only at night, then why don't you invest in some good quality curtains with a lining?, these will keep out the cold air

are these wood or metal frame windows if they are metal when they get cold they will shrink this may be causing the problem

if the draft stoppers you find are not the right size then make your own or hire a seamstress to make them it's simple i made mine years ago

the candle test only works if the wind is blowing through the window at the time i would repeat that test

this doesn't look great but try it and if it helps then at least you will know where the problem is

try rolling a towel length wise and laying it tightly in the window sill next to the window and another where the windows connect if this helps then the draft stops can be designed to match the room.

also there is one more thing i would suggest you test is the between the window frame and the wall to see if any air is coming in there as well

if your radiators are not fitted under the windows this is the best place for them .as it heats up the incoming cold air

I have the same problem. and my Windows are double glazed thermal windows..the house is only 8 years old .i called the builder and he told me the problem is the window is so big(6'* 9.5') bow window that the cold from it just radiates out from it.and the only way to correct the problem is to hang thermal or insulated drapes .we did also not cheap. and that stopped the cold air.the only other solution was to replace the window with the newer paella triple glazed thermal windows.but the cost was totally out of sight.over two thousands dollars!!so we don,t lose the view out the window we only close the drapes at night.if you come up with some thing better please let me know. i don,t like the drapes but what can you do??
