If a person travels from the US to UK...can any electrical appliances be taken along and used?

For example, a hair dryer, or anything sent to a friend who lives there? We are being told it's different there than here in the states, and would need an adapter of sorts. Want to send a friend a candle jar warmer plate, and not sure if she'd be able to use it.
